Following its presentation at the Austrian Cultural Forum in Warsaw, the exhibition has been revised and expanded for its Vienna edition.

While AI has become one of the most significant developments of our time, exhibitions that critically engage with its implications remain surprisingly rare. Yet precisely for this reason, artistic engagement is essential.

How do we negotiate agency and responsibility in a culture shaped by AI and algorithms?

This exhibition approaches AI not merely as a creative tool but as an infrastructure that shapes perception, knowledge production, social relations and imaginaries of the future. The participating artists explore questions of bias, surveillance, ethics, authorship, delegation and participation, examining both the potentials and the risks of AI and data-driven systems.

14 private Sammler:innen zeitgenössischer Kunst in Österreich, organisiert durch den neu gegründeten Verein ACAC – Austrian Contemporary Art Collectors, treten erstmals gemeinsam an die Öffentlichkeit. Die ambitionierte Schau in den Räumen von Krinzinger Schottenfeld bricht mit dem Verborgenen und präsentiert mit über 200 Werken einen facettenreichen Querschnitt durch die Vielfalt heutigen Sammelns, Lesens und Förderns von Gegenwartskunst. Ich freue mich sehr, als Teil dieser einzigartigen Konstellation an der Ausstellung beteiligt zu sein.

The Collection as an Exhibition
14 private contemporary art collectors from Austria, brought together by the recently founded initiative ACAC – Austrian Contemporary Art Collectors, are presenting their collections for the first time in a joint public showcase. This ambitious exhibition at Krinzinger Schottenfeld opens the doors to otherwise hidden treasures, featuring over 200 works. It serves as a powerful testament to the multifaceted ways in which contemporary art is collected, interpreted, and supported today. I am thankful to be a part of this unique collaborative exhibition.

Since late 2022, the rapid rise of generative AI systems has increasingly shaped artistic, societal and political debates. Within just a few years, enormous investments have been made in data centres, and new infrastructures and global power configurations have begun to emerge. At the same time, questions concerning energy consumption, regulation, digital ethics and democratic oversight have moved to the forefront.

Examples such as the virtual AI minister “Diella” in Albania or the admission of the non-binary AI system “Flynn” as a student at the University of Applied Arts Vienna illustrate how deeply AI is already embedded within social, institutional and symbolic orders. Central terms such as deepfakes, neural networks or AI agents have become ubiquitous, yet remain opaque to many.

This exhibition approaches these developments from an artistic perspective. Adopting a critical and post-autonomous stance, art is positioned here as a framework, mirror, testing ground and early warning system. The exhibition asks whether debates surrounding AI can extend beyond concerns about artistic autonomy and whether broader social transformations must be negotiated collectively with other actors.

At its core, the exhibition engages with themes such as humans and machines, bodies and data, publics and authorship, histories and entanglements, as well as the ambivalence between fascination, ideology and power. AI appears not merely as a tool, but as a cultural infrastructure: it reproduces norms and biases, shapes narratives and imaginaries of the future, sets aesthetic standards and exerts political and material agency.

A dedicated section of the exhibition focuses on questions of digital ethics. Lectures, presentations and discussions accompany and deepen the artistic positions on display.

PARNASS Art Magazine features “X FRAMES PER SPACE”. A collaborative exploration by LBI-NetMed and Vienna Contemporary Art Space into how scientific data and artistic perspectives shape our reality.

PARNASS Art Magazine has published a feature on the exhibition “X FRAMES PER SPACE – different logics, shared questions,” which took place in November 2025 at the Alte WU in Vienna. As the final major cultural event hosted in the former University of Economics building, the exhibition served as a significant highlight of Vienna Art Week 2025.

Curated by Annette Tesarek, Melina Steiner, and Sebastian Pfeifhofer (with co-curators Christiane Hütter, Norbert Unfug, and Andreas Schlichtner), the project transformed 1.200 square meters into a complex system of relations. It brought together approximately one hundred contributions from art, science, and technology, creating a mycelial network where different disciplines actively nourished one another. A central element was the collaboration with the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Network Medicine, whose multidisciplinary team integrated research into a layered parcours of painting, sculpture, robotics, AI, and digital art.

The exhibition examined the conditions that shape human perception and demonstrated how the interaction between scientific data and artistic production opens new pathways for the future. Even beyond its closing, the networks sparked between these fields continue to resonate.

In today’s flood of images, we often overlook the frame that determines what becomes visible.
X FRAMES PER SPACE • DIFFERENT LOGICS – SHARED QUESTIONS explores these framings as a fundamental basis for our perception of the world and creates an open space where art and science intersect and unfold. 70 artistic and scientific positions illuminate complex relationships: they ask how scientific data inspire artistic creation and how art engages with contemporary scientific inquiries. It is driven by the interfaces between science, art, technology, data visualization, social imagination, and processes of exploration and transformation. It investigates how different modes of thinking can lead to similar questions – or, conversely, how different questions can yield comparable outcomes. In the multi-logical interplay of Virtual Reality, Artificial Intelligence, robotics, video, installation, painting, and drawing, new spaces for thought emerge beyond established categories. By experiencing diverse perspectives, the exhibition invites visitors to question the apparent self-evidence of our worldview and to move beyond the frame to discover new paths.

WIENER MELANGE rückt sieben ausgewählte künstlerische Positionen in den Fokus. Zentrales verbindendes Element ist die widerständige und nonkonforme Haltung, die sich in den gezeigten Arbeiten auf unterschiedliche Weise äußert. Die Schau spannt einen Dialog von den 1970er Jahren bis zur Gegenwart und befragt künstlerische Ansätze neu, die eine tiefgründige Auseinandersetzung mit Sein und existentiellen Fragestellungen erkennen lassen. Im Zusammenspiel werden unter anderem Acrylhautbilder von Adam Wiener, die imaginären Welten von Michael Vonbank sowie Padhi Friebergers charakteristische Gerümpelassemblagen gezeigt. Politische Widerständigkeit zeigt sich in den Arbeiten Elke Silvia Krystufeks und Clemens Stechers, während Annette Tesarek und Marcel Houf die Grenzen von Kategorisierungen aufbrechen.

Die Ausstellung WIENER MELANGE versteht sich als ein offenes, installatives Raumkonzept, das nicht nur bereits existierende Werke präsentiert, sondern auch gezielte Verbindungen zwischen den Arbeiten der genannten Künstler:innen schafft. Es sollen Dialoge entstehen, die neue Perspektiven auf die zeitgenössische Kunstproduktion eröffnen. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt dabei auf der Herausarbeitung der gemeinsamen Wurzeln im Widerständigen und Nichtkonformen, die sich in unterschiedlichen Ausprägungen in den Werken manifestieren. Die Einbeziehung der Gemeinschaftsarbeit von Elke Silvia Krystufek und Michael Vonbank und auch der Alltagsgegenstände bei Adam Wiener unterstreichen diese Vernetzung auf besondere Weise.

Fantasy, fantasy creatures and dreams are currently making a comeback in the visual arts and are a strong sign in difficult times. Fantastic functionalization becomes possible when something that was previously real suddenly seems impossible. The rules of combining the uncombinable are constantly being renegotiated, including the perception of the fantastic (amusement or discomfort). Realities can be questioned through negation, alienation or subversion. Thus the unreal becomes the new reality, and fantasy becomes the new reason.

Auf den Spuren von Padhi Frieberger (1931-2016)

Ein Zwischenbericht in Wort und Bild von Annette Tesarek & Elisabeth Foissner

Seit 2016 sind Elisabeth Foissner, Restauratorin und Nachlassbearbeiterin von Padhi Frieberger (ehemals Belvedere Museum Wien) und Annette Tesarek, Künstlerin und Kulturwissenschaftlerin, den Relikten des Künstlers Padhi Frieberger auf der Spur. Ihre Begegnung im Research Center des Belvedere Wien vor acht Jahren war der Auftakt zu einer intensiven Forschungsreise.

Die Erkundung von Friebergers künstlerischen Wirkungsorten geht über archivarische Aufgaben hinaus und ist eine tiefgehende Auseinandersetzung mit einem noch wenig erschlossenen Oeuvre. Gemeinsam besuchen sie Orte, die mit Friebergers Schaffen verbunden sind, um sein Erbe zu bewahren und neue Perspektiven zu erschließen. Zudem führen sie Interviews mit Zeitzeug*innen, um weitere Einblicke in sein Wirken zu gewinnen.

Diese Spurensuche verbindet Vergangenheit und Gegenwart und hält die Erinnerung an Friebergers Werk lebendig. Die besuchten Orte sind sowohl geografische Punkte als auch symbolische Räume, die seine künstlerische Vision widerspiegeln.

Annette Tesarek hatte das Glück, in den letzten sieben Lebensjahren mit Frieberger zusammenzuarbeiten und sein Wirken fotografisch festzuhalten. Nach seinem Tod im Jahr 2016 wurde sein Papiernachlass vom Belvedere Wien erworben.

In den vergangenen sieben Jahren haben Elisabeth Foissner und Annette Tesarek umfassende Recherchen zu Friebergers Wirken durchgeführt, um die unterschiedlichen Aspekte seines Oeuvres zu erfassen und zu verstehen. Sie sichten Dokumente, besuchen Orte und machen seine geographischen sowie persönlichen Netzwerke sichtbar.

Ein besonderer Fokus liegt auf Schloss Hagenberg in Niederösterreich, wo Frieberger zwischen 1959 und 1974 lebte und arbeitete. Besonders in der warmen Jahreszeit lockte das Schloss zahlreiche Persönlichkeiten der Wiener Kunstavantgarde der 60er Jahre, so auch Mitglieder der Wiener Gruppe, ins nördliche Niederösterreich. Unter anderem wurde das Schloss von Armin Ackermann, Raimund Abraham, Konrad Bayer, Friedensreich Hundertwasser, Walter Pichler, Oswald Wiener und Udo Proksch besucht. Zu dieser Zeit sind auch Filme, unter anderem von Ferry Radax dort entstanden.
